Most films do things that a lot of films do.

My explanation’s in the spoiler. The point is not that lots of films do it (I admit I exaggerated a bit there) it’s more when it’s not done well. I think it’s weak writing and doesn’t give the audience enough credit to figure it out for themselves. Also, I enjoy ambiguity in storytelling.

It also did a (honestly, really minor) thing near the end which I see in a lot of films (most recently Joker) which annoys me.

In Joker, I thought it was filmed in a way that I increasingly felt it was a possibility. The final reveal didn't really come as a surprise.

That’s why I questioned having the reveal. We know he’s an unreliable narrator and progressively more unhinged, we don’t need flashbacks to multiple scenes to emphasize it.

    Sorry, I'd misunderstood your point.

The reality is that those bits are there for people not paying sufficient attention.

My mum (not that she would watch it) would definitely want the reveals.

Killers of the Flower Moon is surprisingly good. It is very long but I didn’t really notice the length as I found it engrossing. There were some odd performances, especially the wife but everyone else was spot on. DeNiro’s best performance in a very long time. DiCaprio as always excellent… Based on a true story and not in the least bit mawkish. It just goes to show what a horrible society America can be, (unless you are rich and white$…)

Scorsese can be long winded but I didn’t find this to be the case with this one.

    Very Good.

De Niro has been a hard no for me, for a very long time....long since sank into an abstract painting of a caricature of himself. I think the last film that I saw him in that I was entirely satisfied with his performance was in The King of Comedy.

I saw no films last year. not planning on breaking my duck, but it could happen. Not for this.

Yes he is very un-DeNiro like in this film. Plays it straight which warranted my praise.

We have all the streamers so watch a new film every week. Not been many good ones of late other than the Holdovers and this one.

The thing that gets right on my wick though is the almost exclusively English habit of insisting that their way of saying things, and only their way, is the correct and only acceptable way. It's the thin edge of the utterly distasteful wedge of national exceptionalism.

I found this issue much worse when I lived in the US. So I don’t think it’s exclusively English. “Whaddya mean, a lorry? Oh you mean a truck?” “What’s a glacier? Oh you mean glaysher”

Just realised they I’m about 3 days late for this debate. Hey ho…

My experience of that hasn't been "you're saying it wrong" so much as "your words are funny and your accent is cute, say more things". Not that the Americans are immune to healthy dose of national exceptionalism, and it's as ugly on them as it is on the English.

An American once commented that when I swear it sounds very sophisticated. I'm not sure they can be trusted with the language. The Aussies on the other hand are less preoccupied with mangling words and have made many welcome contributions.

I'm very nervous of a country with the right to bear arms, who say "Shoot" as an expression of surprise.

Looking for a filmmovie on Netflix. Hardly anything less than 2 hours long. FFS, as anyone who knows anything about storytelling knows, editing is one of the most important skills. Have settled on Belfast.
