We would probably have gone to the Pana game and made a long weekend of it. Athens is a fine city, one of the very best. Not going to Istanbul for this though. Will wait for the final.
May not matter when the seeded teams get included but the orange half of the draw (where we are) looks much stronger - Celtic, Stuttgart, Lille and Bologna already look challenging. (I realise Celtic aren't at that level but wouldn't want to be playing Martin O'Neill over two legs.) If we get landed with Villa and Roma as well....
Athens and Istanbul. Both have plenty of classical antiquity for the aesthetes amongst us.
I love Istanbul, me. Fenerbahce is on the Asian side so a total ballache to get to but Kadikoy (the area) is quite fancy. Also, my barber supports Fenerbahce. May have to go the chair next door who’s a Galatasaray fan, especially if I’m having the full beard trim etc.
You have to meet in a square an hour or so drive from the stadium at about 2pm to get busses there for about 430 to queue for an hour or so through the security checks. Not allowed to even take coins in as could be missiles.
Then in ground for about 3 hours pre agne and held back for 2 hours post game then busses back to the square arriving about 2 am.
So the area around their ground is irrelevant, all you will see is from the coach window. A 12 hour trip for a 90 minute game.
It's been 30 years since we played in Europe. I think you're a similar age to me, this could be the last European game in our lifetime. (I'm not going.)
Technically it could only be the last away game as we are at home for the second leg, but I get your point and I'm not going either, as I've been to Istanbul several times, don't fancy hanging around anywhere for hours with a dodgy bladder and am hoping to be there for the final anyway.
