Not been to an evening game for some time, but have a ticket for Sheff U.
Is it still the case that you can't make the last train back without leaving a few mins early?

It was, yes. It's not really a few minutes either, it's like 20+.
I know some people get a £50 taxi straight after the game to Grantham, and catch the last train from there to London, but I've never done that myself.
Caveat I've not looked at this much since we moved in January.

As Jim says you're leaving so early it's not worth trying to get back. Likely be worse this year if there's going to be double figures of time added on.
I stay in the Premier Inn near the station (or the Jury's (now Leonardo) if it's cheaper) and get an early train back next day.
