You've just made any further comment you ever make entirely ignorable.
If we go down, Yates will still be in the Premier League.

  • 16 Dec 2023, 1:40 p.m.

We had 15 shots to their 12

We had 1 on target, they had 6.

XG for both teams was same at 1.5.

Seems we create shooting chances we are just really poor at shooting.

Marinakis is funding it. That's his positive contribution, which in the context of football at the moment is substantial. But it's no coincidence that when he temporarily removed his own man and brought in an outsider things improved dramatically (Not just Cooper) and for some odd reason he has been hell bent on dismantling it since then.

Don't remind me of that Boly chance ffs

  • 16 Dec 2023, 2:15 p.m.

Boly is a perfect example of Cooper taking this team in the wrong direction. He's a shit footballer who's good at clearing the ball, but not in any kind of constructive fashion. He wasn't deemed good enough last season and yet this year he's already made as many appearances as he did in the whole of last season, meanwhile we've got our club captain and a far superior player frozen out completely because of one bad game despite having already produced performances this season far in advance of anything Boly has ever been capable of.

    You lost me at Yates.

He’s done very well to be a pro footballer as talent isn’t he forte. He’s an absolute grafter and has made the most of what he has but he’s not a PL footballer. Championship at best. Another example of us over rating our own. He was far worse than Sangare against Fulham but was deemed as the answer to our problems.
    [/quote]

I think that’s complete nonsense. Yates is a particular type of player who is at premier league standard. Ok, he’s not going to get into Man City side, but for us, we are a far worse prem side without him in the team. I think you are negatively biased precisely because he is one of ours and we haven’t had to pay £40m for him.

Every day of the week Yates gets into the team for me

  • 16 Dec 2023, 2:28 p.m.

Can you point to Yates-like players who are fixtures in other Premier League teams? Bonus point if they're good teams.

  • 16 Dec 2023, 2:34 p.m.

As I read through this thread, I keep thinking of the Charlton supporters who thought Curbishley had taken them as far as they could. Where are they right now?

We've been shit for most of the last 20 years. We're not Aston Villa. We sold one of our two best strikers, and the other one is injured. They've been replaced by a squad player from Man Utd and a squad player from Chelsea, neither of whom were pulling up trees at their old club. Our big new signing hasn't settled yet. Our keeper situation is markedly poorer than last season - not a criticism of who we have, more credit to the quality of the two we did have last season. Notwithstanding all of that, we're outside the bottom three.

But sure, let's sack the man who has made us relevant for the first time in 25 years. We haven't had a Big Ron in charge for a while - it might be entertaining.

Addendum - oh, and we had 15 shots against Spurs, and only one on target.

  • 16 Dec 2023, 2:38 p.m.

I assume this is the point Guru comes out in sympathy and another EGM of the We Hate Ryan Yates 3 commences.

We haven't got a striker or a goalkeeper, so it seems strange to single out one of the few guys who is actually putting it in.

  • 16 Dec 2023, 2:41 p.m.

Charlton were a safe mid table team when Curbishley left, and had been for several years - the highest they finished in his 6 years managing them in the Premier League was 7th, and the lowest they finished was 14th. He probably had taken them about as far as he could.

If Cooper had got us anywhere near Charlton's worst Premier League position then we wouldn't be having this conversation, but he hasn't and the two situations aren't remotely comparable unless you actually think that 17th in the Premier League and fighting relegation is the ceiling for what Nottingham Forest are capable of.

  • 16 Dec 2023, 2:45 p.m.

No one hates Ryan Yates. He's an incredibly likeable man who is an excellent servant to the club, but he isn't a Premier League standard player.

I'm more than a little confused as to why there's a rabid Ryan Yates fan base and yet the ostracisation of Joe Worrall, a local boy who is every bit as committed to the club and has far more Premier League standard attributes, goes largely unremarked. Although actually I'm not really, because it was Cooper who did the ostracisation and therefore it must de facto be the correct decision, because Steve can not be wrong.

  • 16 Dec 2023, 2:56 p.m.

You are being extremely dramatic today.

I far from hate Ryan Yates. He is a very likeable bloke who always puts in a shift in and always gives 100%. He’s worked so hard to get where he has and that’s fantastic.

But he’s not a PL player. He has never scored, can’t pass and isn’t quick. He is excellent at giving away fouls.

I’d be absolutely amazed if anyone came in for him if we were relegated.

  • 16 Dec 2023, 2:56 p.m.

Nope. Love Joe too. No idea what has happened there but it is very sad.

  • 16 Dec 2023, 3 p.m.

He's a vastly superior player to Boly, but for some reason the fans decided to pin the Luton debacle entirely on him - in part because Cooper chose to make him the lightning rod for that blame. I would expect a new manager to bring Joe back into the fold immediately, which is another argument to add to the Cooper Out column.

  • 16 Dec 2023, 3:07 p.m.

It's a shame it's all got a bit undignified between JW and SSC but if you think with his pace and turning circle he's got more potential than Yates I'm not sure where to start. He has such basic flaws at this level.

1 thing on Yates though, players like that make going to the game fun. That might be twee to a subscriber, rather than a legacy, but that's a large part of it. The fact that he's putting it in "for" SSC is irrelevant.

  • 16 Dec 2023, 3:10 p.m.

Cooper has always spoken really highly of Worrall, including this season in the aftermath of what happened with his uncle. I'd be surprised if poor performance alone led to him being frozen out, would be off-brand for Cooper.

Whatever the reason though, it needs sorting. I think Worrall and Yates in the dressing room (even if not on the pitch) are key to recapturing the spirit of last season.
