Everything is caveated by the return or not of Awoniyi, but Marinakis has been trying to replace Cooper for over a year now, as soon as he can he will and that should happen because he owns the club and it will work in his image (like Olympiacos) so it is what it is. I am not a fan, but that's irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. We are Marinakis Football Group FC and we will act accordingly.
I would have pulled the trigger on Cooper after Fulham. He’s now being totally reactive and looking like a lost man. He will be fine and get another job fairly quickly: everyone puts our failure down to player turnover not managerial limitation.
FWIW: I don't think 7 changes was the answer. It will be interesting to see how many changes Moyes makes for West Ham tomorrow after they got done 5-0 by Fulham.
At the end of the day it's a results business. Any sentimental attachment to promotion, cup semi finals and staying in the league is yesterday's news and we should all grow up. Despite actually having one of the best young coaches of his generation whos reputation will help him walk into a decent new job everyone knows the only way to get rid of bathwater is to chuck it when it's full of babies. Patience seems to be out of fashion these days after all. Particularly with those who seem to have forgotten the game is best consumed at the WFCG, not grumbling at the idiotbox. The modern world is funny old place.
Talking of which, I'm presuming that there will be general sale tickets for Blackpool or Forest Green Rovers in the cup, so hopefully will be going to that.
And I was at the Luton game (grumbling as he cost the game), Everton game (grumbling as we were utter shite). And I’ll be at the Man Utd game (hopefully not having to grumble).
By modern standards the owner has been very patient. Who knows if a change in manager will help but as things stand we are going down. And the £100m+ cost of that means the dice have to be thrown.
I know, he ran around a lot, clattered people a lot and asked the fans to make some noise a lot. He played to his absolute level and I can’t fault him for that. And he’s a good guy. But he isn’t a PL player and that’s part of the problem.
If we are going to play a system that involves soaking it up and hitting on the break, we need Yates. He's the best presser at the club by miles. I don't like us playing both him and Kouyate really, but it's not Ryan's fault that Sangare isn't living up to the sales brochure.
Putting aside the manager question a little, going to go the games does currently does feel like a side that is going to get relegated. There's the inevitable goals we concede. The huff and puff without really creating chances. The misfortune at crucial moments. It feels really desperate.
But I'm not sure a new manager will change that. But they might. I really don't know. I can be swayed both ways pretty easily.
Anybody who thinks Ryan Yates doesn't improve our side is bananas. He is a very astute footballer because he knows his limitations. His fouls are clever. He winds up other plays and he can actually pass. He also blocked everything and put himself about. He also was the only midfielder to turn and go up the field rather than play the ball backwards for the ball to be hoofed up.
Out of the midfielders Mangala is by far the most talented. He should be playing further up as he has the tools. It seems though that apart from Murillo no-one has the confidence to play the ball out of the back with any accuracy so Orel has to drop back and facilitate play from there. Yates is basically a one man wrecking crew so that the creative players can have their day in the sun. He does it each and every game we play. The others around him need to step up. I noticed that Ryan, Neco and Toff's have stepped up their game. It's up to the rest to get up to par. Elanga is supremely talented but as I mentioned he is the modern day Franz Carr and cannot be relied upon to be consistent right now. MGW needs someone to play with him. There is currently nobody breaking with him apart from Antony. Danilo may fill that role again when he is firing again. In order to do that you absolutely need Ryan. Sangare is meant to be box to box? Well so far I have not seen that evidence. The Dom started great but now? Fucked if I know. Maybe the weather?
