How do you do it? I can jump to the last post, but not the first of the new posts.

On the desktop the icon to the left of the thread title has a blue box if there are unread posts. Clicking the blue box goes to the first unread post.
On mobile if there are unread posts the thread title is underlined. Clicking a thread title with new posts goes to the first unread post. An already read thread title goes to the first post.
Almost every element of the thread list is actually a functional, in that case context sensitive, link.
