Not sure why we should be too upset about not signing a c.£10m defender, to be honest, Chic. How much game time would Dinga have got with Murillo, Morato, Milenković, Boly (& Abbott) ahead of him? Yes, I know we’d have been signing him for the future rather than the next 14 games, but even so.
As for the forward / striker thing, it’s been pretty clear for some time that the club agree that we need one (qv Wissa, Marmoush, Gimenez attempts in last 2 windows), but also that they’re not prepared to compromise on quality for the sake of just signing someone. Nuno has been saying “only if we can get someone really special” for at least 2 or 3 weeks - but you seem to have been too busy getting excited about Sesko & similar to actually listen.
Personally I approve of the club’s attitude. Yes, it’s a gamble - but signing someone would also be a gamble (we could have spent £30m on Eddie Nketiah, for example…). If seriously needed (i.e. a bad Wood injury) they’d have zero time to get up to speed.
The January market is always tricky. For forwards, doubly so (cos almost everyone wants one). For forwards who are good enough to improve our team while at the same time being prepared to bide their time because of joining a club that a) plays one out-and-out forward & b) already have a striker in the form of his life…. Pretty tiny list.
If Nuno thinks Taiwo is good enough back-up, that’s good enough for me.
Sure, Villa have spent money, but they are significantly further on the development path than we are, are still in the Champions’ League, and have just sold a player for over £70m.
Where we have been remarkably efficient this season is beating bottom half teams. We drew against Wolves in the third game of the season but have won all of our other 11 games against bottom half sides. It's our dominance of those teams (and Liverpool!) that has got us here and destroying Brighton, who sit just above those sides, should give us some confidence of keeping that up.
We're apparently signing a 16 year old lad from Aberdeen. Apparently he wrote Alice in Wonderland.
If we sign him and the Plymouth kid, seems like we are trying to solve our "club developed" problem for the medium term future. (Bindon is too old to get the three years before he's 21 but could at least be an option for the bench in a European campaign next season.)
All very sensible and I don’t disagree. But it’s still disappointing not to have got that attacking player the squad needs.
Nuno is never going to say Taiwo isn’t up to it, but if Wood is out for any length of time we will be a bit knackered. Taiwo isn’t getting the goals Wood does.
Didn't sound familiar to me, but he scored twice in the 8-1 smashing of Vauatu, so I must have read his name at some point without taking any particular note. He'll be on Rio Ave's bench within a year, I expect, never to pull on the Garibaldi. Maybe Chris Wood is missing pineapple lumps and feijoas or something.
