Forest bit towards the end but I’m sure it won’t be the last podcast where he talks about this.
There’s a bit where he moans about a player who’s come through academies (obviously Omari Hutchinson) asking him how to press and says he should know. But 1) this appears to be a football coach complaining about being asked to coach a footballer and 2), at the risk of a lecture, don’t different teams press differently and at different times? isn’t it legitimate to ask how he wants his team to press?
I dont disagree with anything he says in what you have quoted above. If he hadnt come in, we would likely not have moved out of the relegation zone, and again he is right, one good season is the outlier from 30 odd seasons of capitulation and underperformance. And surely, if there is one thing we would expect from any manager / coaching staff is to get the physical side of the team into top condition for the challenge ahead. Maybe the players dont like running, but also, maybe the players should recognise that getting out of a relegation scrap whilst playing twice a week is going to involve physical endurance and pain which they are paid very handsomely for.
Define a good season. Objectively I'd argue two (last year and the SSC promotion), but I've enjoyed a lot more than 2 in the last 30. And isn't the fans enjoying it the point?
Yes I agree with you, I think thats true, however the point Dyche seems to be making, is that the certain parts of the club and supporter base have created a narrative around Forest based on one outlier of a season. That narrative is driving unrealistic and unstable expectations of future performance. Whereas if we based future performance more closely to our average 'success' over the last 25 years or so, we would be a little more realistic about the work ahead to keep overperforming given our natural constraints.
Our performances over 30 years are irrelevant. TBH where we were 5 years ago shouldn’t weigh to heavily on expectations. How much money have we spent on the squad? How does that compare to our peers? Line everyone up by squad cost and you get something that’s not a million miles away from the league table, and that shows you where the outliers are.. then you can argue over other factors (such as how long it takes even a well spent half a billion to look like a real football team).
FWIW, even though it feels like we’ve spent mad cash, I’d be surprised if our outlay suggested we should be much better than we are.
I think some fans will always get carried away. It's for the decision makers at the club to stay grounded and not get carried away, but that's not really how Marinakis works.
For e.g., and I think this came up on Forest Focus a week or two ago, we all wanted an upgrade on Jota Silva, but honestly I would have loved to have him in the squad this season, a real fighter, limited for sure, but one year more experienced at the level.
Compare that with Bakwa and Ndoye - who may yet adapt if we can find some stability. But their contributions this season have been close to zero.
Depends what return we can get for them. Not much point in selling them for 30% of what we paid. We did give Sangare plenty of time to adapt and are reaping the rewards.
This may be true in some cases.....Malaria is not an ilness that necesarily clears up easily, but it clears up a damn sight faster than dwarfism.
What football players are aquired for, and sold for, no longer has a direct relationship with how good they are at football. At the elite level, there's brand value, marketing, and perception*. Then there is who you are selling/buying with, and the deals within deals, for which football might be a side effect. The Nottingham Forests seem to be able to aquire, sell, and persuade players to make moves, or indeed sign new contracts, with a level of acuity that seems to exceed normal football business acumen.
* Mason Greenwood is an elite level striker, available for value, who could solve a lot of EPL football teams striker problems - but not expected to do so any time soon.
I recall Pete Blackburn and others on Forest Focus were particularly excited about those two (plus Kalimuendo) when we signed them. We may never know if he was right. It seems strange that they could be so off the mark.
