Obviously the correct choice is Cristiano Ronaldo. Being one of the greatest in history, rich beyond your wildest dreams, and banging supermodels. Why would anyone choose being a reasonably well off punchline over that?

As a fan of Ronaldo - I’d choose Arter every day of the week. I’d be wealthy enough to have no real financial issues, and I wouldn’t have to worry about any loved ones being kidnapped for ransom or getting mobbed leaving the house, on account of no fucker remembering what I look like.

I met a claims broker who was mates with Arter. The broker was a nice enough guy so I'm assuming Arter is alright too.

Sadly no similar story regarding Ronaldo.

I like how this has, despite the 1000s of footballers over the years, developed into a binary choice between one of the goats and charlatan most of us wouldn't be able to pick out of a line up.

but I think Ronaldo might in the end be the best player I've ever seen when you look at the totality of his career, and as far as I can tell he's done it with class and decency while also enjoying the absolute fuck out of it.

Amen to this, I think. The ManYoo of it all is a problem for me, but he’s been an absolutely remarkable player. I’d have picked him over Messi throughout their prime’s. I think he’s a bit of an arrogant nob.. but in the same category of arrogant nob as the likes for Roger Federer and Lewis Hamilton.. kinda like they ponce around a bit like they’re the best in the world.. but they actually are, so fair doos.

I wouldn’t want to be him though. I’m a ‘quietly getting shit done’ kinda guy, so my dream football career is probably Paul Scholes.

I'm agreeing with you and russ now. Fucksake.

My view was always that ronaldo was a player that you could put in any team, at any level, in any position, and he would improve it (note. I don't include goalkeeper, but I'm not totally sure even about that...). Messi was the ultimate cherry on top of a team that had the other bits sorted to work for him, and would definitely be useless as a centre-half.

I will never buy into choosing a 'best', but for me I like players on the basis of what they can do...ronaldo can do an extraordinary range of football actions. Messi can do a more limited range of football things, but amongst those some to an incredible level.

They are both quite good footballers. Neither of them could ride an agricultural tackle like the Best* though.

    * Rates extremely highly on the range of abilities metric. Maybe Best was the best?

A fine, balanced, choice of skill, career and wealth.

But would you also to be a little ginger that’s had photos of his nob posted all over the internet?

You are somewhat burying the lede. From the same article:

    Quoted message:

Marinakis is also understood to have considered his former manager Steve Cooper, but he too is currently employed – enjoying a strong start as coach of Brondby in the Danish Superliga.

Raises the question, who was the indispensible spark that made us Champions League possibles rather than relegation fodder, Nuno or Elanga? Or have we been Edued (a new verb meaning to employ the worst possible director of football).
