A light-hearted quip that if you've got to squeeze through turn-stiles with someone else, then preferably make it a slim lady - and you've jumped from there to kiddy-fiddling? Get a grip.
The polling trend in the Canadian election is dramatic and seems (@Russ?) to be at least partly a reaction against right wing parties flirting with Trumpyness. It’s too early to relax down under, but an election has been called and the polls are steadily moving against the Liberals (they’re the Tories).. again, it seems like what’s happening in the US is largely seen as bad, and people are wary of supporting politicians who are cribbing from the Trump playbook and parties who seem ok with letting proudly shitty bigots run for election.
Baby steps, but people seeing the US and making a point of rejecting any sniff of the same sort of stuff in their own countries, is a bit of encouragement.
It's partly that, but it's also some astonishingly poor politics from the Conservatives who elected a leader two years ago, Pierre Poilievre, whose sole accomplishment is to develop a reputation as being an attack dog in Parliament, but apparently little grasp on anything resembling policy and statesmanship. He/they created an entire campaign around "Trudeau bad" which was going very well for them until Trudeau stepped down a couple of months ago and the Liberals ran a swift coronation process for Mark Carney, the former Governor of the Bank of Canada as well as Governor of the Bank of England.
Carney immediately set out his credentials as a hugely capable and experienced economist and statesman by establishing a clear strategy to diversify Canada's dependence on the US in the light of the Trump tariffs. For all that we have a reputation of being a pleasant and easygoing nation, which we in large parts are, telling us that we're not a real country, we should become the 51st state, and we've been taking advantage of the US for years, is a good way to make Canadians angry, and there's a huge movement right across political lines not to buy US products. Our provincial liquor stores no longer carry US whiskey (sadly) or wine, our grocery stores had shelves full of massively discounted US produce they couldn't move while the much more expensive Canadian produce was selling rapidly (and now the grocery stores just aren't buying US produce if they can help it), and Carney's policies as current PM and hopefully future one are resonating brilliantly with the centrist voters that form the core Liberal voting bloc. Meanwhile Poilievre's big move in response has been to think about appearing on the Joe Rogan podcast.
The Libs have a legendarily efficient vote. The Cons have massive support in the Prairies, but there are only so many seats to be won there. To win a majority in Canada you have to win Ontario and not embarrass yourself in Quebec; the Libs have been superb at winning lots of seats by relatively small margins, while the Cons run up the score in ridings they could drop 20K votes from and still win at a canter. Also, the Liberal political machine is a mighty impressive thing; their campaigns and their ground game make the Cons and NDP (left) look like Monster Raving Loony.
I won't stop worrying until the 29th, but it's a remarkable turnaround in less than 6 months. It's definitely in part a push back from voters against Trump and the Cons' support for him (albeit that's much more subdued now outside the true wingnuts), but the Liberals absolutely deserve credit for just what a good job they've done of shedding the baggage of the tired Trudeau administration and making themselves very clearly the only party that makes sense to lead us through the next few troubled years.
Canadia looking a lot less supine than the UK (and other apparently sovereign nations behaving like the neo cons submissives) then, who are still swallowing the global fascist propaganda in large part. Maybe clever Russ made an excellent citizenship decision after all, despite the endless months of unremitting cold.
