When I say people, I'm not referring to idle speculation on here. More the people going onto newspaper stories and leaving numerous comments and the people who actually studied a crappy royal photo in such detail!

AP are the ones who've come out and said the picture was "manipulated at source". Sadly, that just adds to the conspiracy circus and, as you say, the Palace won't respond (although I imagine there is a crisis meeting happening this morning debating what to do).
National front pages are a mix today - almost all have the picture, but some were printed before the kill notice and are praising what a wonderful mother's day, others printed after it, questioning the conspiracy!
FWIW, the line that she wants to keep her medical history private is probably the key. She's had bowel surgery. That can be pretty nasty.
