I think you can make intelligent choices, based on a range of factors, in a knowing way. Even when marketing and advertising is in play. At the other end people can be persuaded to wear a codpiece and hang a couple of marshmallows from it's base, because all the smart people in Paris are doing that this season.

For me the key is the application of critical thought, and making knowing choices. If you don't unilaterally apply it, you are a thicko predisposed to being misled by misinformation. Whether that is in the form of marketing, advertising, propaganda, or being sold clothes, or taught to appreciate 'art'.

But that might be because I'm just an unregulated philistine, with no visual or group/uniform sensibility.

I think you might be underestimating the insidious impact of subtle/subliminal advertising/marketing. But I take your point. A vigilant application of critical thinking is indeed probably our best antidote against any sudden urge to burn down a library or vote Conservative.

All of our woes are the result of immigrants, coming here and on average contributing more to the exchequer than people born here.

If you buy the first bit, without thinking about the second bit, you are a thicko.

There are other simple tests. Like, as you mention, voting Tory - unless you you are in their VIP lane for contracts, or a long established generational landowner, or member of the aristocracy.

This stuff is generally not hard, if you do a tiny bit of thinking.

Propaganda works on thickos, and is a long established embedded establishment technique. Without it most people would stop stabbing their thigh with a protractor, or aiming the shotgun at their own feet.

"No, Steve from Dewsbury with 2 GCSEs and an ASBO, Dr Ahmed the surgeon is not taking your job."

Presume you saw the video of the “thicko” whinging how he couldn’t get a job due to the immigrants (and neglecting to mention his criminal conviction).

I did not, but they're not exactly an uncommon type. Sadly they're also not restricted to the UK. Doug Stanhope did an excellent piece on this a few years ago.

I've seen people referencing the Leicester Square attack and saying we want immigrants like the guy who stopped the attack but not ones like the guy who did it.

Which seems a bit Minority Report to me.

His Screen/Newswipe stuff is great and some of his stand up is the best I’ve ever heard.

I've seen him a few times and he's never not brilliant. Unlike some of the absolute pricks playing the whole "look how edgy I can be, if you cancel me I win" card (yes Chappelle, you) Doug has made a career out of saying outrageous things and yet still leaving you certain in the knowledge that he's got the right perspective on the world.

I keep reading about the dangers of exposure to Mpox, but honestly - I didn't think Hanson were THAT bad.
