Don't worry, he's not on about us. We are old age now.

Let cars do what they want, and transport to city centres grind to a halt. Public transport, isn't really public transport any more (except on under-utilised subsidised routes). People are now largely going into city centres to work, often in ways that they don't need to go to a city centre, and the process is inefficient and problem causing.

There needs to be a radical re-think about the role of cities, access to them, and some actual town planning around that.

Expect more tinkering around the edges, grasping at grants for 'solutions' however inappropriate, and the writing of big cheques to mates, for the foreseeable future (my lifetime).

My underlying point is that you can throw as much money as you like at cycling infrastructure in Sheffield, but it's the hills that are the biggest problem stopping people from switching to bikes. I'd cycle if I could bring my bike on the tram, but I can't. So I'd need two bikes, one at each end, with absolutely no guarantee they'd still be there when I returned.

    Yeah.

My main take away from this entertaining tête-à-tête is that Sheffield is shit.

    As is cycling.

Both of which everyone knew already. Except Jim. Because Jim.

In a tie in to another thread, I remember an interview where Seb Coe said those hills, combined with his engineer dad/coach, made him the athlete he was. But, for me, all this discussion really served to do was to remind me that "oh yeah" the snooker final was last weekend. Let me see who won. Meh.

    Get an ebike.

    Eee, bike. Oh ah.

    "Can't Dutch This"

This is really right out of the REFORM playbook tbh. Pit a SEND school against people trying to get to work safely without fucking up yours and everyone lungs and environment.

  • 10 May 2026, 8:15 p.m.

It's not really about converting people that way. People have been forced away from cycling from a young age because it's not safe. If it's safe then some people will do it. Not everyone, obvs, but every person on a bike makes the road flow better

And cycling advocates mostly want this. It's car-fcukers and bike-haters who object on bullshit grounds.

I note that the roundabout, whatever it cost, prioritises pedestrians and cyclists. So not sure that cyclists and cycling should be catching all the bullets there.

Pedestrian journeys are the most common journeys in urban areas by orders of magnitude, and improving road infrastructure for cyclists generally involves improving it for pedestrians too (as well as wheelchair users etc). It’s only so expensive because so much money has been spend, over decades, ensuring that cars have the run of the cities.. and undoing even small parts of that is costly.

Wes Streeting has just noticed that Keir Starmer doesn't have much of a vision and has resigned.

No, but he quit because of the pious pressure. But Reform's defence is typically cack-handed. Making adult films isn't exactly your "private" life.

It is if you look like that. I can't imagine you are selling any...so should be able to remain quite private?

He's running an Only Fans account with his partner so by default he's selling it. How successfully is anyone's guess.
