I know a senior civil servant who says Starmer has already named his ministers and they could be announced today. Seems a bit a quick but they’ve no reason to make it up.

What's quick about it? Why wouldn't you have a plan in place for the eventuality? I know that the uk has become accustomed to unprincipled arseholes making it up as they go along, but it doesn't have to be that way.

    All very true.

The last decent person they had to report to was Justine Greening. Schapps always gets a mention for being a complete cunt, hardly a surprise.

TV folks speculating why Starmer stopped off on Whitehall between Palace and Downing Street.

Obvious thing they didn't mention was he wanted a shit.

He can do both of those things in Downing Street now though. Isn’t that the whole point of it all?

He's not in yet, handshakes and a speech outside before he can hit the Downing Street bog.

The economy will pick up in the next few years and things will get better for people

No idea what you are basing this on. Hope isn't a strategy.

Interest rates are already back to what they should be and mortgage rates will start to drop soon. That’s a huge start. Energy bills also starting to come down. (Which is why the timing of the election was odd).

Interest rates are still over 5%, have not yet come down at all and a tonne of people are rolling off fixed rates imminently and are going to have to pay a lot more than they have been. Energy bill are rising in October just in time for winter.

But Labour might get lucky if growth picks up.

I prefer to think that yesterday we got rid of the massive shit. This morning we just pissed the last of the skid marks away.

    Ew.

Thought the assumption was that most of the shadows would become ministers. Which is a good thing- they'll understand what's needed.

That would make sense, a couple of spots to fill.

So there was a bit more to the ministerial appointments rather than just going with who was shadow.

Peerages for the HoL have been given out and Patrick Vallance is the Minister for Science and Innovation. No place for Emily Thornberry as the AG is Richard Hermer KC and what seems the best of the lot, James Timpson is the Prisons Minister. Great to see subject matter experts getting jobs.

Spent yesterday afternoon at the Red Lion opposite number ten. We got a table out the front and soaked in the vibes with 7-8 pints. Most the cabinet walked by on their way in to get their jobs and got cheers and congratulations from the public (plus lots of bleary-eyed campaigners and party staff who'd clearly been drinking all night). Was really fun.
