Further maple syrup update: batch 2 was a success, but I didn't filter it and while the hippies like their food things raw and unfiltered, it displeases me to have a cloudy bottle full of niter. Attempted to filter it but it was too thick to pass through a fine enough mesh.

Batch 3 I cooked about two thirds of the way and then passed it while still very hot through a coffee filter before putting it back in the pot to finish reducing. It's now cooling but looks much cleaner.

Batch 4 is currently boiling and I'm going to filter this one twice to see if I can get it clearer still.

I’m not sure I’m buying Russ’ brother-in-law story, I reckon Russ was involved with the maple syrup heist and is laundering his loot.

One cup of maple syrup is about 8 fluid ounces. There are 32,000 fluid ounces in a ton, and they stole around 3000 tons. At my current production rate of around 2 cups per day, it will take me 16,500 years to fully launder the proceeds.

    Best get cracking then!

I’m sure Tricky can help you Macgyver together some large copper boiling vat, that definitely won’t explode and cover you in molten tree goo.

It might be more efficient just to ask him to eat the stuff.

He’ll probably add it to a vegemite, fish and porridge dish.

I have eaten that...it's an actual recipe, not a weird unbelievable concept.

    ...well, not for me.

You can use the bilge to make moonshine.

[now if somebody doesn't make a prison gag I'll actually be disappointed].

I recently started making smoothies in the morning with kale, spinach, oats, banana, peanut butter, protein powder and soy milk, and they're fucking delicious. So much nicer than starting the day trying to choke down a bowl of oatmeal.

Definitely reads like one of my recipes. If you don't like 'choking down oatmeal', just add more water....or puss filled alkali fluid if you prefer (if you blend uncooked oats you are literally making oat milk in the smoothie).

Yes, but I want oats for the fibre and soy for the protein. I don't like oatmeal because it's neither food nor drink, it's like eating wallpaper paste. I've tried and I just can't, the only way I can face the stuff is if it's filled with berries and nuts and maple syrup. I can get all those nutrients and more from a smoothie, which is much more palatable.

oats and what you appear to be calling 'oatmeal' are the same thing. It's just that you are cooking one. Tip - if you don't like them that way, don't do it. Just add them to stuff. I find the cheap supermarket saver ranges over here are perfectly serviceable for use cooked (as porridge, but also milled and used as a flour), uncooked, or to make milk from.

Yes, I'm aware, which is why I said "I want oats" and "I don't like oatmeal". As I said in my original post, I put 2/3 of a cup in my smoothie.

Sounds like you two aren't getting your oats often enough.
