We’ve very rarely produced players capable of playiing at this level. The years in the lower leagues made it look better than it was.
It still produces players capable of playing in the championship and further down the leagues.
The way the systems are you just lose them to bigger clubs anyway, see George Hemmings who left us at 16 and now featuring for Villa at 18.

Feels like we've given up on it since it was renamed the B team. Most promising young player in several years sold on the cheap to Oxford without being given a chance around the first team.
Adopted the Chelsea method of buying young first-teamers from elsewhere then hopefully turning a big profit when we sell them on (which should work with the likes of MGW, Murillo, Anderson, but less so with some of the more recent signings).
Even the academy player in every squad has become a bit of a joke. Feels like Abbott's development is being held back just so he can sit on the bench when Yates is injured/suspended.
How many academy graduates have actually made their first team debut since we made the top-flight? More than you think, but five were under Cooper and four of them were never seen again - and only one has appeared in the Premier League.

We'd have been very thin at centre back, especially in the europa league, if we'd let Morato go in January.
