Would they have been effective starters? Personally I would have tried them, but...

Well as soon as Trippier went off and Palmer came on we looked much more functional. Five in midfield is the only way forward. You try this shit against The Swiss and they will kill us. We need to match them in the centre and have someone annoy the fuck out of Xhaka.

Slovakia were very good at exploiting our idiotic tactics and were very unlucky not to win that. 30 seconds to go. Wonder goal. How very Italy.

Chicago: Breathing a massive sigh of relief.

Trippier getting injured probably saved us. We immediately looked more balanced and in control. Not his fault per se, but he's out of position and in the sort of garbage form that should have seen him nowhere near the squad. All three that played there after gave us a better shape and control.

Now. Foden through the middle, and a striker that makes the runs to open space between the lines, and engages the centre backs, and we should be somewhere near the starting point that we should have got to a few years ago.

Adam Lallana looks like he's having a good game again.

Clips on the Twatter already of England fans stomping away from the ground early and ranting about Southgate and the team.

My old man always made us leave early to 'get ahead of the traffic' and it was the first thing I stopped doing when I was old enough to go by myself. I understand the thinking if you've got young children or have mobility issues, but struggle to fathom why you'd travel all the way out to Germany and walk out at 1-0 with a few minutes to go.

That said, England were fucking dreadful today.

And Spain go ahead shortly afterwards.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia looks a useful player for Georgia and Wiki informs me that the reason is likely why he's scored a bunch of goals for Napoli in Serie A.

I assume that these people go to the theatre but leave before the final plot twist/denouement and think the play is shit.

Although presumably most plays have a periodically functional character near the left wing.

Watching England under Southgate is a bit like watching a production of Waiting for Godot, with more peril.

Sixth Sense was the last time I was unspoiled and had no idea of the ending.

I had no idea of the premise at all to be honest.

    Vladimir: Lets go forward
    Estragon: Yes, lets.
    <they do not go forward>

Southgate: Some are born mad. Some remain so.
Gary Neville: Nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes. It's awful.
Tricky: There's a man all over you, blaming on his boots the faults of his feet.
