Or, alternatively, the Scotch grabbed the defender’s shirt and then threw himself to the ground in what I thought, in real time and on replays, was a laughably obvious attempt to manufacture a foul. I’m not surprised Shearer thought it was a penalty, because Shearer was so good at cheating he probably doesn’t even know the difference any more.. but as much as dunking on refs is a legitimate way to pas the time, their job really isn’t helped by coaches and ‘experts’ lining up to criticise them for occasionally not falling for this kind of shite.

I think that he put his hand across the defender and then grabbed his shirt as a reflex when he got kneed in the calf but it's borderline. To claim it's 100% a penalty is obvious partial.

If I was a Scotland fan I'd be angry at not getting a penalty - but equally angry that he just didn't take the shot. He could easily have done so.

Never a penalty, he changes direction to throw his leg into the defender. Similar to the Saka against Bayern one, I'm glad the officials saw it for what it was.

He fudged his first touch and the defender was on him, so the decent chance was gone. That’s why he hung around for some contact.

If he’d gone down without yanking himself around the defender I’d have believed it was a fair fall from fair contact (still not a pen). The general theatrics of the thing is what convinces me it was a total con job.

Perhaps Steve Clarke would be better focussed on why he put out a shit team with shit tactics that played shit. But did run around a lot.

Because it's pretty much all he has?

And Konsa heavily tipped to replace Trippier.

Expect more of the same performance wise.

Probably, but it is all a bit 21st century school sports day, we've all got our medals for turning up and we don't want to graze our knees.

Nothing really matters until the weekend. Well, nothing matters at all. Etc.

Konsa is good but a right footed center half so not sure where he fits in or who plays left back if that happens?

I would like Wharton or Mainoo in for TAA.

26 man squad and it wasn’t worth taking a punt on an uncapped left back.

Wouldn’t it be more sensible to drop Bellingham in there, play Foden as a 10 where he plays for City and then stick Gordon or Eze on the left?

This approach is has the greatest consensus of English opinion that I believe Ive come across. Seems to escape Southgate.

This would have worked, given that I'd have been practicing it, and variations on it, for a full four year tournament cycle.

Southgate would never had done it in a million years.

We've now hit the sweet spot of public opinion convincing the leopard to change his selection spots... but not have prepared the team to arrive at the tournament in good condition with a tight squad. So it now needs on the fly reactive changes. Which is his weakness.

A penny for the thoughts of those know nothing idiots who thought that we have the best squad, and anything but a tournament win is failure.

You appear to have Ivan Toney playing the Marlon Harewood roll up top.
