It's a tribute to Jonny Lee Miller's entire career.

Fair enough. That is absolutely bizarre. Has he had surgery or something?

Kylian Mbappé suffered a nasty busted nez last night and is now a doubt for the Holland game on Friday. No 'immediate need for surgery' but if he does return, he'll need to wear a protective mask.

I did not buy into the “Serbia are shit” argument. Quite the opposite. We also were very good for the first 35-40mins and it would have been good to either keep that up or switch to more effective counter-attacking approach once Serbia came forward….we were surprisingly poor in this regard.
However, Southgate has a distinguished track record of letting games drift. His in-game management is less adept than many of his contemporaries at international level and has only improved slightly since the WC semi-final in 2018. I was surprised that he bought on Gallagher but maybe he wanted a higher press and Chicago’s boyfriend is a chaos machine. Bowen briefly made a difference as Saka was getting bullied in the second half. As was Foden. Maybe Eze (or Gordon) on the left would have made a difference. I like Wharton’s care and use of the ball. He’s like John McGovern. I would like to see him play.

Offside lines or snickometer, there is always a line. People will disagree with the line wherever it is drawn. Just pick one way of drawing the line and stick to it.

The game was screaming for Foden either to be off (For Gordon) or shifted to 10. Play Bellingham at 8, Foden ahead and Gordon on the left and we lose nothing defensively and gain a lot offensively. When we were under the cosh, with Kane clearly not quite at it, bring on Watkins and play him deeper for him to run on tp the through ball or give Toney half an hour to go and be a cunt. I fear we will be Southgated.

Canal+ says he's definitely out for Friday.

    FTFY.

Southgate can do no right in the eyes of an astonishing number of England fans - and when I read assorted webmongs writing "the game was screaming out for..." (as is written after every single England game, with only whatever was being screamed for varying), I despair. We won. We looked pretty good for much of the game, and defended well in the less good bits.

What happened to Belgium a couple of nights ago could easily have happened to England the night before, but it didn't. France didn't exactly steamroller a pretty meh Austria side. Spain looked good going forward at times, but their defence allowed way too many shots on goal. Yes, Germany looked good, but they were a) playing Scotland, at home and b) playing only 10 of them for almost half the match, so you'd kind of expect them to look pretty decent. [After all, Rule 1 is that we must never write off the Germans.]

I still haven't forgotten the decades of shite that preceded Southgate, up to and including failing to qualify for major tournaments at all (more than once in my youth). It seems that (in my eyes) rather too many Ingerland fans have got bored with the tedious business of England actually being consistently pretty decent, and are acting as though somehow it's an outrage that we aren't winning everything easily. We are not the best team in the world, or in Europe. We're somewhere around the top 4, so semis is roughly par. But if England go out in the semis, there will be a ludicrous amount of anger.

It's tournament football. Once you get to the last 4 - arguably last 8 in the Euros - everyone is pretty good, so it comes down to a bit of luck and Warburtian fine margins. I am reasonably confident that England will make the last 4. Then let's see.

The continual whining and complaining about Southgate from England fans is beyond dull. Anyone would think we lost.

[And don't give me any of the "he's wasting a golden generation" bollocks. Almost every generation seems to be regarded as 'golden' - and both England & Belgium call tell you how successful their most recent 'golden' generations were...]

Lots of sense here, but I don't think this is true. There wasn't when we went out in the QF of the WC to France. Everyone was disappointed, but generally thought we'd done pretty well. Similarly the final of the last Euros.

Did I imagine all of the whining about how southgate could have done things differently to win the game?

I don't necessarily disagree, but the notion that winning games is predominantly about making changes in the game is slightly reductive. It could quite easily have got worse...making changes often has the effect. I think there is a lot of 'entitled' 'want' from many football fans. Largely because they don't appear to understand the complexity of actually playing a game against another good side who are also trying. These things often come down to statistically lumpy moments, decisions, luck, something coming off, or not quite coming off. The idea that england are the best team/squad and that anything other than a tournament win is failure, is so laughable it's hard to know where to start....and yet that's the space that a lot of people find themselves in.

It's nice to be in with a genuine chance of winning things. For most of my lifetime we weren't...often with (in the general scheme of things) equally good players at our disposal.

Mildly annoying not to have an early game.

  • 18 Jun 2024, 3:51 p.m.

Depends on who we go out to, but we are better now than we were then and if he doesn't win it he's failing because we may never get a better chance.
