Once again Anderson was our best player by an absolute mile - not a shred of doubt in my mind that he can and would be a starting midfielder for any legitimate contender. I can not believe that Newcastle didn't have someone else they could have dumped to get PSR compliant and selling him will forever be a decision they will regret.

Yes, but they're going to lose Guehi for nothing, and Wharton is still very young (15 months younger than Anderson) and not as ready to step straight into a top 6 side.

I'm also not sure that Palace is a good model for any club to follow.

Until a couple of weeks ago, Wharton was ahead of Anderson. He’s struggled with injury which may turn out to be a bigger problem and would probably have started these last two England games if he was fit.

I don't disagree that competition from McAtee won't do MGW any harm, and a period of not being an automatic starter every game (which no-one will be, given rotation & 2 games per week, every week) could be a very good thing for him... but fuck me we're quick to write players off as a fan base.

Go back a year - less, actually - and there were people seriously calling for Elanga to be dropped in favour of Jota Silva... and also describing Morato as a cheat code, given that he'd come in in a number of tight games and helped see them out. How did those two snap judgements turn out in the end?

Now those same people are describing Elanga as "irreplaceable" (I note that he only got 10 minutes from the bench for the Barcodes today...) and Morato as a total lilablility.
