Watching the highlights for the eleventy billionth time. For the 2nd goal CHO burns past his man, gets to the dead ball line, has Spuds defenders unsure which way to face and who(m) to track. Cut back. Unmarked MGW. Goal (despite a bit of a spammy shot).
It seemed so simple. We / I have spent a lot of time criticising the standard of crossing this season. It felt at times like it was a tactic for our inverted wingers to cut in and curl inswinging crosses from the corner of the box. Which opposition defences had no problem with - facing man and ball whilst set. With only Jesus to aim at. And so many crosses floated over everyone beyond the back post. Or hit the shins of the first defender.
So what changed today? Had CHO lost confidence or fitness to go past his man to the dead ball line until today?
Was he under instruction to cut in and cross under previous headmanagercoaches?
Did he identify that he could beat whoever it was he beat?
All season our wide players have tried to cut in back onto their stronger foot and float crosses. Is it coaching, individual decision making, something else or all of those things?
I guess it does of course depend on the match situation. Today we were 1 up and counter attacking away from home and CHO found himself not doubled up in the way that he would be at home if it was 0-0.
So I guess the answer is largely circumstance and / or score. Though I would still like to see CHO try and take his opponent on the outside more often. The opposition are aware of his tendency to cut inside and shoot. His cut inside crosses are generally terrible. And if we have replace Anderson with Williams on corner taking then winning them by hitting the byline and having them blocked might not be so bad?
Actually maybe another answer is that last season we had Elanga who drew opposition defences over to his side, giving CHO more space to operate. And perhaps Wood was a better all round target than Jesus.
Out there on a forum somewhere, the Spurs guru is proclaiming they're doomed and fretting about West Ham overtaking them. I'm hoping that Spurs guru is more accurate than Forest guru. No offence to Forest guru obvs.
Out there on various football forums are fans chimpwanking because they won an important game and think they are safe. Despite the fact a bad weekend puts us back where we were.
If I'm the Spurs DoF or whoever is running shit there, I think I'm probably giving Ange a call. Their squad is built for all out offense, they're probably man for man the fastest team in the league and their defenders aren't very good at defending so play to what you have and go full Keegan. A lot of Spurs fans still love him so he'd get the support, and it's a no lose situation for him - if they go down the damage was already done by his predecessors, if they blitzkrieg their way to a couple of wins that keep them up he'll be even more of a hero.
The systemic issues they have will still be there next season, but for the last 7 games of the season I think he might be their best chance.
