Im currently with Directline and havent really checked it on years. So thought I would this year. Renewal due at the weekend.
Looked on Compare the Market. Lots of cheap offers but I dont really know the providers.
Also tried Saga which was surprisingly more expensive that Directline.
Any insurers that arent shit I should check out?
    Or avoid?

Always worth taking the price from compare the market and putting it to your insurer to see if they'll come close or match it.

We've had the most horrendous experience with Liverpool Victoria (LV) on a house insurance claim - well over three years of constant stress and still not resolved. Three complaints to the Ombudsman (all upheld), threats of legal action our end and they've already been ordered to pay us more than two grand in compensation.

I know it's not car insurance, but I wouldn't touch that company with a bargepole.

Admiral, combined car and house insurance. I send them money, never claimed so can't comment any further.

I'm also with them for house Insurance, never had to claim. Will look to move on next renewal in solidarity.

I'm with the AA. I haven't had any reason to engage the claims dept in tbe 6 months I've been with them.

    HTH.

Ingo stopped getting lifts with me, because every time he did he needed to write a witness statement, or change a wheel.

    You're not trying hard enough.

Signed the old man up to By Miles a couple of years ago, after LV took the piss with their price hike. They charge by the mile which works out well since he's semi-retired, and they're just overall cheaper anyway when you do the math. Plus they didn't invoke any ridiculous hike after year one. Have never had to try claiming, mind. Found them through Money Saving Expert, and there may even have been some signup cash back deal through the likes of Topcashback / Quidco.
