That just makes us look like proper numpties. Coming up with daft new terms to blame our defeats on. I thought we played pretty well considering the players we are missing, but that goal was entirely down to the positioning of the wall and the goalkeeper and they should take responsibility for that.

Agree. But the fact is that the ref placed the ball and used his special foam to mark its correct placement and the position of the wall. If what Toney did wasn’t cheating, what’s the difference between that and, say, Forest redrawing the wall foam one yard closer to the ball? Or moving the ball before taking a penalty?

He moved it a few inches to the side, not even closer, if anything further away. Turner lined the wall up badly, Yates knew it was wrong but didn't change it and then jumped out of the way when the kick was taken and Hudson-Odoi stood to the side watching when standing next to Yates would have stopped the shot.

I think whether closer or further away is irrelevant in this case - there was an advantage gained. Hopefully the league make clear that what Toney did was not ok - the fact he moved the foam tells you he knew this - and refs / VAR will be more alert to it in future.

Having said that, completely agree that Nuno's focus needs to be on all the things we did wrong, we should have alerted the ref, as well as all the other things you mentioned.

    Honestly, the world's gone mad.

Everything is someone else's fault and another someone else needs to do something about it.

Good to see our sparkling brandnew set piece coach is showing dividends

  • 21 Jan 2024, 10:31 a.m.

It's cheating (football, to be good, requires a healthy dynamic of players pushing the limits, and a good ref arbitrating), but the outcome is on us.

The wall should be watching the kicker, shouting at the ref that he's moved it, and adjusting their position to allow for the new angle. Those who say it makes no difference know nothing about the act of kicking the ball - getting half a yard can give you a line for a shot, where one didn't exist. If that happens, move the wall to block the line.

Amongst all the things that you should do on a football pitch, watching the ball should be quite high up the list.

I strongly dislike set pieces, and what they have become. A minor technical infringement shouldn't mean that we all stop for a couple of minutes and go to special teams. Play should be continuous, but set pieces are stat friendly events.

It’s better management to come out and blame incidents rather than publicly bollocking the players for mistakes.

Not sure why people don’t get this.

  • 21 Jan 2024, 10:34 a.m.

    Also:

"We've dropped a bollock there, we should have been alert and reactive, but toney has cheated, and the ref hasn't done his job." = F.A. Charge.

  • 21 Jan 2024, 10:56 a.m.

So we're saying there was a binary choice here to either come up with some idiot claptrap about the referee or publicly bollock the players. Righto.

Wasn't it Sky not Forest that highlighted this and used the term ball displacement?

Moving the foam while the refs not looking suggests something not quite right surely?

Shouting at the ref gets you a yellow card these days so unsure how the players could have highlighted it.

But the wall should've been better positioned and that's on the keeper. Does seem the only thing he can do is save some shots. Kicking, wall positioning not so much.

Oh and I think he does move the ball forward a bit too, not that I think that makes much difference but you know, rules and stuff.

Surely we are going to loan a goalkeeper. Can anyone send the club a list of the third choice keepers in the prem? There must be one better than what we have?

    Or play Shelvey.

  • 21 Jan 2024, 11:11 a.m.

I'm assuming we won't be bringing anyone in because it will look bad in our FFP defence.

  • 21 Jan 2024, 11:13 a.m.

These keepers will cost us more points than any deduction.

  • 21 Jan 2024, 11:23 a.m.

There are plenty of keepers in the world playing in leagues worse than this one or not playing at all who are better than what we have got and would absolutely love a shot at playing premier league football. It is the easiest position on the pitch to find quality, we're just making it look hard.

  • 21 Jan 2024, 11:26 a.m.

I would guess a loan keeper would be in keeping especially as we have sold Scarpa.
