This is me. Really want him to succeed but I'm coming around more to Russ's way of thinking unfortunately. He's a yard behind the pace and no sense of urgency or danger to balance that out.
He is showing zero awareness of anything happening around him. His relaxed approach to passing and movement is very obviously not appropriate for this game and if he can’t figure that out and/or do something different then I am Team Russ on him generally.
Really would like to see a (fully fit) Dominguez out there instead. He’d be perfect for this.
Only 2 added minutes is ridiculous, but I don't mind on this occasion.
Right, Wednesday rules - sub 2 goal Jesus at half time, miss more chances and lose 3-2?
I’ve been banging the same drum as Russ pretty much since Sangare joined the club. People say ‘there’s a player in there’ because he cost 35 mil but there’s been no sustained evidence of this to my eyes.
I also think he has a fundamental problem - he can’t kick properly and often gets his feet tied up in basic moves. His weird challenge for the Betis goal is a perfect example.
He’s not good enough at this level. I’m not even sure he’d have stood out for us in the championship.
I agree with the anti Sangare crowd that he been poor. He has been in the right place to shut down space and make some little interventions with short layoffs. But on the whole too slow and awkward... and deeply crap on the ball.
But i'd rather see him in there as a disciplined screen, over a buzzy Dominguez who would give away more few kicks.
We'd been told by some that he would be suited more to European football but no obvious evidence tonight. That said, it's being played more at Premier League pace first half.
