There is a very useful photography review site, called dpreview. It is 'owned' by amazon (bought from an independent), but most, if not all, of the content was community generated.

Amazon just decided to shut it down out of the blue.

The community behind much of the content, or at least parts of it are rebuilding services independently.

This is interesting to me because it highlights the danger of depending on external services in the control of corporate bodies. (there are also dangers in depending on well-meaning individuals, but less so if the services software is open sourced, and data is made available).

It is also interesting because misago (this here software which you are using) forms a core part of the services being community built, in the form of the forum dprevived.

There's an article here, that gives some specifics of the project to replace the lost photography services, but also a wider look into corporate versus community.
