There are some rumours from somewhat credible tweeters (Xers) that Serge might be going to the same team Ronaldo has joined for a fee of £25M. If that is true, given he was a free transfer and this new chap is costing about 9.5M (and as an option), and he is out of contract in 12 months, the business case might be understandable even if the football case is less clear cut. I presume this fella may be being sent to us with a discount given his legal issues.
