Serge is not the Messiah, he's just a reasonable right back. Two good crosses on Friday being an absolute anomaly for him in recent months. He looks slow and positionally dodgy. Was repeatedly done without lube by Rashford last season though other defenders have had this issue. If he goes, there is better to be had. Possibly within our squad.
A string of good crosses, on friday, surely? There was another that Taiwo was centimetres from tapping in at the back post. I try to look at the actions a player makes...not just the outcomes, which can be a function of what others do with the ball. Under modern conditions, and laws, defending is a mugs game. Even the best are going to get done. Serge has been a consistent high performer for me. Not something to be sniffed at.
If anyone recalls the player of the year discussion, we looked at the points return for the top performers in the squad and Serge was way out ahead of everyone. Maybe coincidence.. or maybe we are a much better team when he’s in it.
I wouldn’t begrudge him an epic payday (even if it’s not one I’d take myself… and, believe it or not, I had a decent shot at life-changing Saudi money once and was thoroughly uninterested) but he would be extremely hard to replace.
