Gibbs White needs to be benched now and again and Skateboard was the right sub.

  • 13 Aug 2023, 11:50 a.m.

    Exactly.

  • 13 Aug 2023, 12:29 p.m.

Pretty clear Cooper doesn’t think he’s got it. Given how much he’s played in pre season, I wonder whether Aguilera might be the intended back up for MGW. (In reality, if Gibbs White was out, he’d change formation and replace him with a striker.)

I refer the Dishonourable Members to my previous comparison of Scarpa with Carvalho; (some)-fans-eye Messiah “unaccountably” not rated by manager

  • 13 Aug 2023, 1:10 p.m.

Sure, but there's a difference. Scarpa has a track record of elite participation and success. Can play. Carvalho, no such evidence existed for, and nothing since has suggested that he could.

Sure there's a question over whether Scarpa could play at this level, and there's no doubt that the best placed to decide that (and whether he can fit into the systems used here) is our coach. I defer to his judgement.

I'm just sad, because there's a player who can kick in there. In my view.

  • 13 Aug 2023, 2:05 p.m.

He has not done enough for me to get sad at all about this. If Cooper and those closest to the team thought he would be good enough, he wouldn't be going. The reason for him not being good enough is probably not his technical ability. There have been other issues and it may be a view has formed that he isn't going to be suited to the league. Bright personality, good range of passing, seemed like a nice guy but meh. Good luck to him. Maybe a bit odd we couldn't do it earlier though, as you wouldn't expect Oly and Forest to be playing hard ball with each other. There's no way on earth Aguilera is going to be given the role of our back up number 10, he will be loaned out and I'm not convinced he will ever play for us. Someone else is coming in.

  • 13 Aug 2023, 2:13 p.m.

...and going out. I am expecting a big move out to fund two or three incomings. When I say fund, I mean sufficient FFP headroom to do the deals.

  • 13 Aug 2023, 2:25 p.m.

If Scarpa got the minutes on the pitch in a position he can play, to the same degree Carvalho got, then I'd agree. But he's barely been given a chance.

  • 13 Aug 2023, 2:31 p.m.

I think you are right and that will be Brennan, even though I think the accounting suggests FFP isn't a problem for us (but I think there may be a view within the club that taking circa 50m for him right now is prudent).

  • 13 Aug 2023, 3:08 p.m.

Well I ordered the third team shirt with Scarpa on it because I knew this was coming.

I really like Gustavo and he hasn’t been given a fair shake. He is not as physical as others but technically he is brilliant.

It is a simple case of Gibbs White rules I think.

    Cooper out!

    Chicago: Upset.

  • 13 Aug 2023, 4:24 p.m.

Scarpa will be in Piraeus shortly for a fee of about fifty million won't he?

  • 13 Aug 2023, 4:32 p.m.

Undisclosed fee. Number made up at financial fabrication plenum.

  • 13 Aug 2023, 5:08 p.m.

Wonder if Johnson's miss yesterday knocks his price a little.

  • 13 Aug 2023, 5:44 p.m.

Where have you seen this? Can only find a Post report saying Forest are ‘close to sanctioning’ a move.

  • 13 Aug 2023, 5:47 p.m.

According to people in the know. Scarpa begged Cooper to allow him to stay and Steve was having none of it.

Thought he was a people person.

    Anyway, he is is gone.

Chicago: Waiting for some actual upgrades.

  • 14 Aug 2023, 8:51 a.m.

Oh please, Chic! If you’re resorting to “ITK” posts, you really are scraping the barrel; we’ve slipped through a worm-hole and are back on the original board with Hannah, Ivy the Teddy, EBP, Donny and that bloody Argentinian gimp.

If Cooper doesn’t think Scarpa is up to it - and it’s been pretty clear for a while now that he has question marks on that front, at best - then he would simply be wasting a place in his already tight squad. See Steve Cook last year. ‘Being a people person’ doesn’t mean he can’t be ruthless; you’re just trolling now.

We can argue on here about whether we agree with Cooper’s assessment of Scarpa, but frankly I don’t think any of us has seen enough of him to be sure either way. Cooper sees him every day in training and, for whatever reason, doesn’t fancy him in the side. That being the case, the only sensible course of action is to ship him out if possible, just like everyone else who isn’t going to get a game.

I don’t know why Cooper doesn’t rate Scarpa, but my hunch (FWIW) is that, though he has obvious ability, Cooper thinks he lacks the physical presence needed to thrive in this league. Listen to recent post-match interviews and how often Cooper mentions athleticism, pace & power. Watch Taiwo & Elanga combine for our goal at Arsenal; that’s what he’s on about. Scarpa is about 5 stone wringing wet and isn’t notably quick, for all his ability with a ball at his feet. Perhaps that’s why he reached his late-20s before a European club took a punt on him. Maybe not; who knows?

We have our best manager in 20+ years at the moment; I think we have to go with his judgement rather than throwing our Ivy the Teddies out of the pram.
