There are a few from the promotion squad who'd 'not done it at this level' and they mostly did very well last season. I'm with Jim - at the right price, I'd happily take him as an option we don't currently have.

It's moot anyway. Would come down to whether Cooper and his team feel the player has the minerals alongside the ability to be coached at the level.

I could see the Brennan to Totteningham thing coming to pass. I wouldn't be surprised if Cooper fancied Rodon, given that he's had him before...and if he did fancy Djed again, it would put some pace into a general area of the pitch that we would be losing it from. If Brennan does struggle with the local scrutiny, it might be a time Forest can move him on and add to the squad without a negative balance sheet. Depending on how things go in the future he could be at peak value.

It's a possible 'everybody wins', and there shouldn't be any hard feelings around it. Yes we would lose something, but we could gain some things as well.

....I should say that the biggest concern, for me, is the spurts enhanced wages tax. The 'next' club generally pays the cost of failure of a big move for a player with potential.

We seem to be taking a long time to announce Turner.

Maybe it's an elaborate reveal video

My concern in letting Jonno go would be the lack of goals bearing in mind Biscuits Awoniyi and also changing style of attacking play through that sale to make us more dependent on Biscuits.

Or he has turnered us down at the last minute

He wasn't exactly integral to our survival in the last quarter of last season, and I wouldn't be surprised if SSC finds his inability or unwillingness to track back as frustrating as I do.

There are sufficient things that Brennan doesn't do, that I can't believe that the right recruitment couldn't compensate for. Clever coaching would definitely help, and we are well placed there.

It's why I'm not against helping him further up the pole, for the right players/cash.

I'd like a player who could head the ball coming in at the back post. Not necessarily a salmon, just not a Dover sole.

For the tons of floated crosses that we never deliver?

    Nice triple negative.

Look at his trajectory over time since the Lincoln loan, which incredibly was only 2 seasons ago. Pretty impressive. And if you hear him being interviewed talking about his game (there are a couple of examples of this if you go back through Forest TV long enough) he is so so impressively technical with how he analyses his own game and how he comits to improvement.

I think we also need to be mindful of the number of important goals and assists he weighed in with last season before we wave him off into the sunset. Would obviously need to be replaced somehow, which is far from easy. Player is also more likely to improve than regress at the level, I think.

I'm not against Brennan moving on if a deal is felt to benefit everyone, but I don't buy into this suggestion he wasn't starting towards the end of the season, hence he's perhaps not needed.

  • 8 Aug 2023, 8:21 p.m.

I think "needed" is a very broad word. There's no doubt that he's a valuable player to us and he is a player who opponents need to account for, but he isn't essential to us in the way that Morgan or Taiwo are. I do accept that the way that we played last season was often born of necessity and not our (or more importantly Cooper's) preferred way of playing, but unless we make the changes to the team that will enable us to play further up the field and with greater possession, and squad building activities thus far wouldn't suggest that will be the case, I fear he's likely to be as peripheral this season as he was at the end of the last one.

I like Taiwo, but he was way way more important to us last year than Taiwo over the whole run of the season.

Last season saw Johnson progress from a right sided forward to a more central forward. I think by the end of this season, if he stays with us, he could be the focal point of our attack with Awoniyi backup. He could then be worth £80-100million..

But to sell him now, have Awoniyi/Wood as the options up top with MGW, Scarpa, DannyLo, Aguilera and Elanga as options for two supporting forwards, I don't think we are in a bad place.

Take the money and use it to strengthen the defensive spine, survive in what looks like a weak Premier league season, and build again with more financial clout next year seems reasonable to me.
