Can we be certain that Brennan doesn't have a release clause? Was widely reported that failure to agree on a figure was the reason he didn't sign in the winter of 21/22. £40m seems plausible for what they'd have agreed on last summer when he did sign.
Unlikely he'd go to West Ham or, especially, Everton anyway.

I think that's the key point - he doesn't get the 40M, so even if there was a release clause at that value you have to question whether Brennan would look at either of those clubs and think it's a good career move.
Speaking of release clauses, it looks like Liverpool got MacAllister for 35M in the end. Ouch.

Not much new in Tails' piece today in The Athletic, but he says that the expected transfer budget this year is no more than half what we spent last year and that it is to some extent dependent on who we can move out.

It seems Benfica are quite interested in Renan Lodi which is a bit of a bugger as they have champions league football, nice weather (for Brazilians) and speak Portuguese.
Shame, if they follow through with offering him a wedge. Still think the WFCG is unbeatable but I can see he might feel different if this is the case.
