Sam problem though. Neither look strong enough to play centre half at this level.

He's only 22, played a full season for Juventus last year, has Italy U21 caps. He was and remains a good purchase. The issue is this should have been his settle-in season with 10-12 sub appearances and a few cup games rather than the pressure he's been put under.
He's out for the season isn't he?
I like Savona, but fwiw I think Simon is right, ideally like for like backup is what was needed, maybe younger, maybe not as good as the first choice, but similar style / attributes. Savona was probably seen as a last minute option at a reasonable price, but (in hindsight, for me at least) it doesn't feel like joined up thinking.
Yeah that I can get on board with. It's our lack of overarching style / blueprint type thing. Whatever you want to call it. What I guess Edu should have been trying to sort out.
Where I have some sympathy for Edu is that the owner doesn’t allow a consistent blueprint. If you are recruiting for Nuno, no Ange, no Dyche, no Periera, how are you supposed to make it work?
You'd hope that managerial decisions are taken as a group with Edu saying exactly those things. Maybe he's not being listened to, but there's been no leaked stories suggesting that. So you've got to think he's being passive and therefore partly culprible to the decisions.
I think most of the players he signed are complete duds though, no matter which manager they were signed for.
